Our Recommendations

Standard Bred Heritage Turkey

Explore our standard-bred heritage turkeys, a mix or pure selection from our farm’s breeds. Unlike the turkeys at local feed stores, heritage turkeys can naturally reproduce, live long lives, and lay fertile eggs—they can even fly! At Sugar Feather Farm, we prioritize personality, weight, and vigor in our breeding.

Our hens typically weigh around 14 pounds, and toms range from 20-25 pounds. Preservation and weight are our main focus, as these breeds require conservation, and according to Conservancy Programs, weight is crucial. While proper coloring is secondary in our program, we recognize that heritage turkeys are endangered and need attention regarding their weight. Known for their calm and friendly disposition, strong maternal instincts, early maturity, consistent egg production, and superior meat quality, heritage turkeys are seasonal layers, laying eggs primarily in spring and summer. Egg production can be irregular, and hens often go broody. We collect eggs, when possible, always considering the birds’ welfare and care.

Heritage turkeys are notably resilient and sociable. They often follow us around the farmyard, with toms displaying their splendid feathers. Preferring free-range living and high roosts, they don’t cope well with confinement due to their size and nature. Remember, these turkeys can fly. Hens tend to roam, while toms stay near the food source, and they all become vocal when sensing danger or visitors to the farm.

Our farm’s breeds include:

– Narragansett

– Black Spanish

– Penciled (akin to royal) Palm

– White Holland

– Oregon Blue

– Bourbon Red

– Tiger Blue

While selecting breeds, we attempt to meet requests for specific colorations, but as a small farm, our options are limited.

Feed Recommendations: turkeys are considered a gamebird and need higher protein when developing. We recommend Sugar Feather Farm gamebird starter,  when they are forst born poults, Sugar Feather Farm gamebird grower when they are growing and when adults can switch to our adult feed. If you are raising strictly for meat production and pasture a different feed regimen will apply. You can reach out for recommendations on that program.

We also highly recommend Oil of Oregano – It can help prevent blackhead disease! This is a critical supplement to your turkey program and we highly recommend.
