Our Recommendations

Easter Egger Chicken

The Easter Egger chicken is an excellent choice for a variety of settings, including backyards, homesteads, or farms. They are generally friendly and robust, making them ideal for family flocks, although individual personalities may differ. They occupy a middle position in the flock hierarchy, allowing them to integrate well with other birds. They thrive in various weather conditions and are particularly suited to Vermont’s harsh climate. Noted for their adaptability, they manage well in confinement. They are prolific egg layers throughout the year, and their size makes them suitable for dual-purpose use.

An Easter Egger is not a breed but a cross of 2 types of chickens to obtain the goal of blue colored eggs. The offspring of these typically are hardier birds and do well in most environments.

The goal of our breeding program for the “Easter Egger” chicken is to develop birds with diverse feather colors and patterns, high egg production, and, importantly, colorful eggshells. As this is an ongoing project, we cannot guarantee egg color. Our eggs come in a range of hues, from stunning blues to tans and pinks. We use our blue egg layers like True Blues, Cream Legbars and Ameraucanas to produce our unique offspring and color variations.

Feed Recommendations: we recommend starting baby chicks out with Sugar Feather Farm chick starter for the first 3 weeks, then switch to our Chicken Grower. Use the Grower Feed until they hit maturation (which is when they start to lay) then switch to Sugar Feather Farm Adult Feed

We highly recommend using the Oil of Oregano in their water daily as a supplement to aid with digestion and overall health.

History

The “Easter Egger” chicken originally came from Chile in South America, discovered by the Araucana Indians, which is really the Araucana Chicken.  They are not a breed – but a variety of chicken that doesn’t conform to any standard, which is totally ok because they are just an all-around great chicken! We would say they are one of the most popular chickens. The true Araucana chicken is rumpless (tailless) , has a small curling tuft of feathers next to each ear and come in different pure color types. The Easter Egger chicken is different because they have a full beard under the beak rather than a tuft and have a tail rather than rumpless and don’t have pure color types (sometimes no tuft or beard). The color of their egg shells varies from pale blue to various shades of green and light brownish/pink eggs.
