Welcome to the world of The Wayandotte chicken. We have always loved to see these beautiful birds in others flocks, they seem healthy and happy birds with even temperaments. The Wyandotte chicken breed is one of the favorites among backyard flock owners for their dependable, egg-laying, easygoing nature and cold hardiness. We do think they are an excellent bird for a beginner chicken owner, families with kids, or even an experienced chicken flock owner looking for a dependable egg layer. They are available in the standard size and a bantam or “smaller” size. Both with the same breed characteristics but Sugar Feather Farm has the bantam sized birds. Make no mistake, their smaller size has no effect on all of those great features listed above. Their most distinctive feature is their laced or scalloped feather patterns, giving them an intricate and eye-catching appearance. We have 3 feather patterns available: gold laced, blue laced and splash. When hatching eggs, and selecting birds any of those patterns can occur.
While their beauty is undeniable, Wyandotte Chickens are also celebrated for their exceptional egg-laying capabilities. These dual-purpose birds consistently produce a steady supply of small tan eggs, ensuring your household enjoys a regular source of fresh, wholesome eggs. They are dependable layers averaging 200 eggs and more a year. Because of their smaller size, they take up less space, eat less and are all around more economical.
With their dense feathering and adaptable constitution, Wyandotte Chickens are well-equipped to thrive in various climates. Their hardy nature makes them a suitable choice for both warm summers and chilly winters, minimizing the need for additional care during extreme weather conditions.
Bantam Wyandotte Chickens are known for their ease of care. Their resilient health and robust immune system reduce the likelihood of common poultry ailments, making them a suitable choice for both beginners and experienced poultry keepers.
History:
The Wyandotte comes from the regions around upstate New York and Ontario, Canada. It was originally named American Sebright, however, it was later changed to Wyandotte after a Native American tribe that lived in those parts. It is believed to have been developed around the 19th century. It was recognized by the APA in 1883. The Silver Laced variety was developed in New York State and the others in the north and northeastern states in the latter part of the 19th century and early 20th century. Breeders aimed to create a bird that was not only visually appealing but also functional in terms of egg production and meat quality.
