Our Recommendations

Bantam Lyonnaise Chicken

Are you ready to elevate your poultry experience with a rare and stunning showstopper? Look no further than our exclusive Bantam Lyonnaise (La poule Lyonnaise) flock! These extraordinary birds boast unparalleled beauty, making them a true beauty on our farm. As breeders, we take immense pride in our flock’s exceptional rarity and captivating diversity.

Charmingly Friendly and Calm Companions

Among our various breeds, the Bantam Lyonnaise stands out as one of the friendliest and most calm, however they can be flighty at times. Their diverse features, ranging from frizzled feathers to flat, crested to no crests, and 4 or 5 toes, make them a unique addition to any flock. Imagine having a flock with this delightful variety! They can have multiple crest variations and bird colorings for the bantam sized so far are black with some white and yellow flecks. There are no standard color variations at this time.

Versatile and Hardy

These birds thrive in free-range living, even in predator-rich environments. Bantam Lyonnaise chickens have a natural instinct for bug foraging and can lend a helping beak in your garden beds. Because of their pint sized bodies, they don’t tear up your gardens!  Whether in confinement or a closed run, they adapt really well. They are prolific layers and are impressively hardy, withstanding Vermont’s harsh weather conditions. All our birds are vaccinated for Marek’s Disease and raised Non-Gmo.

Egg-cellent Qualities

Not only are they a feast for the eyes, but our Bantam Lyonnaise chickens also lay small-sized white eggs, perfect for your morning omelet or pickled eggs. The Bantam Lyonnaise is a dual-purpose breed, they excel not only in egg production but also in providing excellent-tasting breast meat, a culinary delight in France.

Preservation Advocates

Our passion for the Bantam Lyonnaise breed goes beyond their stunning appearance and culinary attributes. They are a landrace breed, adapting effortlessly to any environment, making each hatch a delightful surprise. Outside of France, these chickens remain virtually unknown. By choosing our Bantam Lyonnaise flock, you become a steward of preservation, helping ensure these exceptional birds thrive for generations to come.

Feed Recommendations: we recommend starting baby chicks out with Sugar Feather Farm chick starter for the first 3 weeks, then switch to our Chicken Grower. Use the Grower Feed until they hit maturation (which is when they start to lay) then switch to Sugar Feather Farm Adult Feed.

We highly recommend using the Oil of Oregano in their water daily as a supplement to aid with digestion and overall health.

Lyonnaise are virtually unknown outside of their native France, and they are so rare that even in the erudite Aviculture Europe this fascinating chicken is listed under “Unknown Breeds.” Lyonnaise were created by breeder Mr. Etienne Tamburini of Lyon, France, in the 1950s, and it was almost two decades before this mid-sized large fowl was formally recognized as a breed. To develop the breed he crossed a white Silkie and a bantam Dutch rooster with a bare neck and frizzled feathers. These offspring were then crossed to a white-crested Dutch, and Black Hamburg. After, fourteen years of work, the breed was recognized in 1969. The breed was intended as a table fowl, and it is known for its excellent white meat. It is said that the Lyonnaise has one of the finest breast meats of all chickens.
